So Many Diapers And Only 9 Months To Decide

A lot of new and expectant parents are really unsure about which diapers to choose. The first decision is to decide between cloth or disposable; even though in my opinion the obvious choice is cloth the majority are still, unfortunately choosing to go the disposable route. For most, convenience (I also like to call it laziness) right now is the deciding factor. Not, thousands of dollars saved, earlier easier potty training, cleaner landfills or any of the other benefits of using cloth diapers. That being said, some parents clearly see the benefits of cloth right away and have a pretty easy time deciding to pass on Pampers. However, once they have decided to go cloth they are bombarded with an enormous selection (mainly on-line) and price range of cloth diapers. So what should they do? If you ask me, it’s easy, save yourself some time, money and avoid the stress of looking and just get the Boobles Bottoms complete diapering system. Cloth Diapers Winnipeg???

I find it somewhat comical how long it takes people to warm up to the idea of using cloth diapers… not actually using them just warming up to thinking about using them. A few weeks ago I was talking to an acquaintance who just so happens to be an expectant father. When I told him about our cloth diaper business here in Winnipeg, Manitoba he right away said, “oh I don’t think my fiance would go for that.” Since then he has slowly been asking more about cloth diapering… so does it take most people a while to warm up to the idea or is this just a Winnipeg thing? The only customers we actually get to meet in person are here in Winnipeg and the rest across Canada and The States we only speak with over e-mail and sometimes phone. Why Do People Do This?

Why is it when an expectant mother tells another mother that she is planning to use cloth diapers, that 95% of the time the other mother tries to discourage her? My sister recently had a baby and is obviously using cloth. I can’t believe that she has actually had people from her work e-mail to inquire if she is still using cloth diapers or if she has given up on ‘that foolishness’ yet. Why do these people care so much and why would they want her to switch to disposables? Could it be that they want to see more children in diapers 3 years old and beyond? I doubt it. Do they like the idea of thousands of s*!t filled disposable diapers heading off to our landfills to sit for 500 years? Probably not. Or is it that they want everyone to waste thousands on disposable diapers, have an extremely difficult time potty training their defiant 3 year old and ultimately take the lazy way out like they did? I think we might have our answer.

It’s funny, other parents seem to look down on those of us who make the intelligent choice to use cloth diapers, but medical professionals seem to have nothing but priase for this choice. My sister in law is expecting in a couple of months and she too is getting a lot of flack for her plans to use cloth. I get it but I don’t. It’s like trying to discourage someone from breastfeeding, eating healthily, exercising, buying a fuel efficient vehicle or anyother choice that is better for ourselves, our children and or our planet… just because they were too lazy or for lack of a better word stupid to make those choices.

Who Uses Cloth Diapers Anyway?

This guy… really he does. Obviously his parents were the ones who chose to go against the norm and use cloth diapers on him. So, would you assume that his parents are hippies, maybe his mother wears loose flowing dresses, has dread locks in her hair and sits around singing Kum ba yah? I have actually met his parents and from what I could tell they are not some modern-day ‘hippies.’ Far from, in my estimation they are a young, intelligent, well-educated couple who saw cloth diapering as a good idea for many different reasons. For sure some modern-day ‘hippies’ do use cloth diapers, definitely not all and certainly not the majority of our customers. We find that the people buying cloth diapers these days seem to mostly be young (mid 20′s – mid 30′s), intelligent, couples who: don’t like the idea of wasting thousands on disposable diapers, are disgusted at the thought of changing a 3 year olds diaper and don’t know if they can feel OK about throwing countless non-decomposing disposable diapers into our landfills. Another thing we have been seeing a lot of has been grandmothers buying the diapers to be used on their soon to arrive grandchildren. They see our diapers as affordable, practical and a lot like what they used with the exception of the velcro closures instead of pins and the one size design. Hopefully there will come a day when the majority of people will realize that cloth diapers are for pretty much everyone and don’t just see them as some Kum ba yah save the whales thing (yes, I’m quoting Kevin O’Leary) for hippies and environmentalists.

Birth To Beyond Potty

16 months beyond to be exact. We wanted to post a picture that shows how Boobles Bottoms one size diapers fit from birth to potty… this one seems to do the trick. Our newborn model weighs only 8 lbs and has been wearing her Boobles Bottoms since she arrived home from the hospital a few weeks ago. Our toddler model is 34 months old and wore Boobles Bottoms until she was potty trained at 18 months of age. I cannot stress enough how important it is to have a comfortable, trim fitting cloth diaper. As far as trim fitting one size diapers go Boobles Bottoms win hands down! If you were skeptical about the birth to potty claim of our one size diapers, the proof is in the picture.

1 in 5 Canadian Parents

So I’ve seen some new Huggies ads that say about 1 in 5 Canadian and 1 in 3 American families can’t afford diapers (disposables obviously). This kind of leaves me wondering if these parents who struggle to buy disposables for their babies/toddlers/children are unaware that cloth diapers are a much more economical option? I run the risk of looking like an idiot here, but, I honestly didn’t really realize there was anything out there other than disposable diapers… until my mother told me to use cloth. OMG Mom, you’re a genius, why would I pay wayyy more for disposables when I could use cloth? But it seems like a lot of people must not know there is an alternative to disposables (a much better one in my opinion) or they just completely ignore it. People will talk about the costs associated with having a baby and they always talk about diapers and most often formula. Have cloth diapers and breastfeeding never occurred to these people? I’ve seen it on talk shows, reality shows and even Til Debt Do Us Part, a show about budgeting and not spending money you don’t have. Here’s my thought, if you can’t afford to use disposable diapers, USE CLOTH. And if you can’t afford formula, BREASTFEED. But for some reason this doesn’t seem to happen, these people just complain about not being able to afford these things they chose instead of going with something they could have afforded. I don’t get it. There are however some parents (very few) who can afford formula and disposable diapers but breastfeed and use cloth diapers anyway… imagine the world if everyone had that kind of common sense.

I recently read an article in The Edmonton Journal that said, ”cloth diapers today are generally more expensive than disposables,” and “cloth diapers are items better talked about than used.” To this I say, Cheryl Shepherd you obviously don’t do your homework, and have little to no idea what you are talking about. Cloth diapers being something better talked about that used is one of the dumbest statements I have read in a while. I guess this article spawned from someone suggesting that the needy as well as teen moms should be given or at least encouraged to use cloth diapers. The writer as well as an association for teen moms in Edmonton strongly disagreed with this. There is a valid argument that cloth diapering is not the best idea for people who live in poverty and don’t have access to a washing machine. I do have a hard time believing that all lower-income families are lacking a washer and dryer and wouldn’t benefit from the savings. I actually went out to do a consultation with an expectant teen who was thinking about using cloth diapers to save money… in the end she decided that cloth diapers were too much work. She also decided that breastfeeding was gross and would take away from her social life too much. So yes, I agree that we shouldn’t be pushing cloth diapers on teens as most don’t yet have the capacity to make these decisions. Cloth diapers do save a lot of money, and I think it would make sense that if you have a baby and don’t have the money for disposables that you would use cloth. People don’t always, or probably more accurately usually don’t do what makes sense, and I don’t expect diapering decisions to be any exception.
